PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THE SUMMER
SWIMMING-POOLING SAFELY
Hydrocution is a frequent summertime accident. It occurs often when the body is immersed in water too quickly and is goes into shock, due to the overly large difference in temperature between the skin and the water. The shock can cause fainting in the water and lead to drowning.
Generally speaking, the following recommendations apply:
- Enter the water gradually, particularly when the water is cold and you have been exposed to the sun.
- Avoid overly-extended sun exposure.
- Avoid bathing after consuming alcohol in excessive quantities or eating an overly large meal.

Think you've got a manga story in you somewhere? Most of us are capable of coming up with a decent storyline. It's getting it out on paper that takes some skill. Here's a few tips to help you bring out the next bestseller.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Time varies - could take days, could take months.
Here's How:
- Write A Story Synopsis. Being a freelance writer, I learned a long time ago that you can't develop your story until you know where it's supposed to go. Your objective? Write a one paragraph synopsis of your entire story, leaving out details and character specifics. Then take that paragraph and reduce it down to one sentence. For example, Dragon Ball Z might be "a group of friends battle strange enemies to protect the Earth." Does that really cover DBZ? No, but it sums up where the story will lead.
- Create Character Profiles. In order to develop your story, you need to know who your characters are. Where did they come from? Do they have morals and values or none at all? A love interest? A best friend or an arch enemy? What makes them tick? Write a complete profile as if you were telling someone else about your guy or gal. Develop their strengths and weaknesses as these will come in handy when you begin to develop your storyline.
- Write Your Story. For the moment, don't think about layouts or issues. Just write your story. What happens? Who does it happen to? Why did she leave or why did he come back? Will his powers ever return? Why did he lose them in the first place? Get all your questions answered on paper first. Then it's time to...
- Think First Issue. With the "bigger picture" in mind, think first issue. You'll need to give some background to your story and you'll want enough current action to keep the reader intrigued for your next installment. Decide how much information you want to give in your first issue. Got it? Now you're ready to storyboard.
- Layout Your Storyboard. "Storyboard" is a phrase that refers to the layout of your manga or comic. Each panel conveys a certain amount of information and will also contain your artwork. Don't worry about the illustration right now (unless of course, you can draw as well as write!). Just focus on the text. Who says what to whom? What action scenes will you include? What information will they provide? Break your story down into pieces that you can section off into individual panels.
- Bring It All Together. It's time to pull your story together with the artwork. Either find yourself a good anime artist, or, if you're feeling adventurous, try your hand at drawing your own characters. There are several great books out there that teach drawing, as well as a few good online sources. Bring each character to life with various facial expressions and the dialogue you created in the storyboard.
- Publish. Ready to deliver your pilot issue to the masses? Try TOKYOPOP's Annual Rising Star of Manga contest or put your manga online by setting up your own website. Good luck!
Tips:
- If you're having trouble, start with some Fan Fiction. The characters are already created, all you need to do is play a game of "what if?" to come up with an alternate storyline.
- Look at some of your favorite anime shows and mangas, and try to figure out why they're your favorite. Is it the action? The characters? What makes it so great?
- Don't rush your masterpiece. Sometimes, great ideas can just come to you, but don't get frustrated if the development process takes longer than you imagined.

All About Factories: History and Importance
Long ago, there were no factories. If you wanted food, you grew it yourself or bought it from a nearby farmer. If you wanted clothing, you made them yourself. You might have even made the cloth from wool sheared from your own sheep. Until recently, people made much of what they needed with their own hands. Other items were bought from craftspeople living in the area. Things took a lot of time and work to make and cost a lot of money.
Factories changed all that. In a factory, workers gather together to make products. Each person has a specific job so products can be made quickly. For example, in a clothing factory, one person cuts out the fabric, another person sews the garment, while another person adds buttons and finishing touches. Factories have made our lives easier in many ways. They’ve also made some things harder.
One hundred and fifty years ago, children were often forced to work in factories in the United States and England.
CARNIVALS IN NAVARRE
In Navarre, the Winter sorrows hide under the happyness and colour of the
rural carnivals.
The witches, the bears, ghosts and sacs full of straw, giants of 3 metres
height and bandids go around the streets and recover the traditional dances and
rituals of the past.
In lantz, located between the valleys of Anué and Ultzama, Miel Otxin, a
giant of three meters height is burnt in the fire. Along the parade, Miel Otxin
walks with Ziripot, a good and fat man made of sacs filled in with straw and
fern. He also walks with Zaldiko, a brave horse that goes against him to make
them fall down.
The Arotzak, that carry hammers, run after the Zaldico to shoe it, and
finally the Txatos, wearing animal leathers, and with sticks and brooms, shout
at all the people.
In Goizueta originallity and good sense of humour join together in the
Carnivals. All neighbours are waiting for the big parade to come. The zomorrok,
coal merchants in the past, carry “cencerros”, wearing white clothes, a “faja”,
a “pañuelico” and a red “boina”. Along the route they paint the women faces in
black to rub them with theirs. They sometimes stop to dance the “zagi-dantza”, which is full of pirouettes.

(inland, outer and island ones)
PAGES 24,
25 AND 26. Read everything and revise the MIND MAP. You need to be able to fill
in all the mountain ranges with the highest peaks. Example: the Pyrenees are in
the outer terrain like the Macizo Galaico, Montes Vascos, Cordilleras Béticas
and Cordilleras costero-catalanas. The 2 highest peaks are the Aneto and the
Posets.

DRAINAGE BASINS
RIVERS OF SPAIN
Guadalquivir
Seville is Spain's only commercial river port, thanks to the Guadalquivir running through it. The second longest within Spain, it extends for 657 kilometres. Beginning in Jáen's Cazorla mountain range, the Guadalquivir finishes at the Atlantic Ocean, rushing through the Gulf of Cádiz.
Tajo
The Iberian Peninsula's longest river, the Tajo begins its long journey at Aragon's Sierra de Albarracín 150 km inland from the Mediterranean coast. It continues for 1,007 km, becoming the Tejo as it crosses the Portuguese border, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean close to Lisbon. In the above photo, it's passing through Toledo.
Ebro
What Castilians call the Ebro is known as the Ebre in Catalonia. Discover its origin in Cantabria's Fontibre which derives its name from the Latin words Fontes Iberis, meaning source of the Ebro. A delta on the Mediterranean bordering Amposta in Tarragona province is its final destination.
Guadiana
Separating those two old foes Portugal and Spain, the Guadiana keeps Spanish Extremadura and Andalucia apart from Portuguese Alentejo and Algarve. It includes the Aquelva Dam which results in Europe's largest reservoir. Like the similarly Arabically-titled Guadalquivir, its ultimate destination is the Atlantic Ocean, also by way of the Gulf of Cádiz.
Duero
There's nothing dour about a river known in Portual as Douro. In fact, it's believed, that its name comes from the Celtic tribes which occupied this area in pre-Roman times. On both sides of the Portugal-Spain border, there are famous wine-producing areas, with Spain's Ribera del Duero particulary well regarded by oenophiles.
Miño
Galicia's longest river extends to 340km. Like the Duero, it crosses the border into Portugal where it becomes the Minho. And again like the Duero, it houses one of Spain's famous wine regions, Ribeiro, celebrated for its tart, fruity whites.
Segre
A tributary of the Ebro, the Segre's basin takes in Andorra, France, and Spain. Poetically, when Andalucia was Al-Andalus, it was known as Nahr az-Zaytūn, River of Olives. As you can see above, it splits Catalonia's Lleida in two. In total, 11 bridges span both banks as the Segre courses through the city.
Júcar
The Júcar's 509km in length, beginning at Ojuelos de Valdeminguete, on the eastern flank of the Montes Universales, Sistema Ibérico. In 1982 it burst the Tous's reservoir, causing the biggest-ever flood on Spanish history, killing more than 30 people. The flood's known as La Pantanada de Tous.
Pisuerga
270km in length, Pisuerga is the Duero's second major tributary. Rising in the Cantabrian Mountains in the province of Palencia, autonomous region of Castile and León, it most famously passes through Valladolid. Shortly after going through this city, it enters the Duero.
Genil
Andalucia's second longest river, 359km end to end, actually flows into the region's longest, the Guadalquivir, at Palma del Rio. The Genil is actually the Guadalquivir's main tributary. Starting in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, just north of Mulhacén, the highest peak, it later wends its way through Granada, Loja, Puente Genil and Écija
The recent invasion of an Amazonian floating plant is putting the Guadiana in danger. Given the size of this plant it is important to prevent and control it. If not it can block the river.
